Teens, Crime and the Community: Community Works

Teens, Crime, and the Community (TCC) and Community Works (CW) combine education and action. It helps teens understand how crime affects them and their families, friends, and communities, and it involves them in crime prevention projects that make their communities safer and more vital.

TCC and CW couple classroom lessons with opportunities to work in the school or community to actually reduce or eliminate a specific crime problem. Local partnerships with community organizations and crime prevention or other specialists draw on community expertise in such fields as law enforcement, victims' service, crisis counseling, and drug abuse prevention to enrich the curriculum and support teen projects.

TCC and CW aim to:
  • Make teens aware of their vulnerability to crime;
  • Teach them how to protect themselves and their communities, and how to recognize, avoid, and report specific crimes;
  • Present both victims' and offenders' perspectives within the criminal and juvenile justice systems; and
  • Motivate teens to take action in their schools and communities by understanding the costs of crime and what can be done to prevent it.

Kentucky has been named by the National Crime Prevention Council and Street Law, Inc. as one of several expansion sites for the TCC and CW programs. Kentucky works in partnership with Indiana and Tennessee law related education program leaders and education and juvenile justice departments to bring this spectacular program to the area.

  4. Property Crime
  5. Criminal and Juvenile Justice
