Sam Givens has served the Courts of Kentucky for 16 years. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Sam is a 1980 graduate of Pleasure Ridge Park High School. He earned a BA from Centre College in 1984, and a JD from Chase College of Law in 1987. Sam and his wife Martha reside in Lexington Kentucky with their two sons, Ben and Jon.
Sam started his professional career in private practice with Tom Burnett in Lexington Kentucky. He began his tenure with the Kentucky Courts in 1988 as a law clerk for Circuit Judge Robert Jackson of the 13th Judicial Circuit including Garrard, Jessamine, and Lincoln counties. In 1990 he joined the staff of the Kentucky Court of Appeals, working as a staff attorney for Judge Boyce Clayton. He also had the pleasure of working as a substitute staff attorney for Judge Michael O. McDonald before becoming a member of the Central Staff of the Court of Appeals in 1992. From 1992 to 1999, Sam worked as a staff attorney serving under Chief Staff Attorneys George Fowler and George Geoghegan. In 1999, Sam became Chief Deputy Clerk assisting the Clerk of the Court, George Geoghegan.
It has been Sam’s honor to serve under the administration of five Chief Judges of the Court of Appeals. Throughout his career with the court, Sam has focused on improving the technology of the Court of Appeals. It is his goal to make technology more useful to the Court and the Public.
